HCWA Recruiting Summer Interns

HCWA Recruiting Local Students for Summer Internship Program
Authority hosts information session at Southern Crescent Technical College

(McDonough, GA – April 8, 2026) It was standing room only inside Room 121 at Southern Crescent Technical College’s (SCTC) McDonough campus when the Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) hosted an information session on April 1, to recruit students for its Summer Internship Program.
And to think, four years ago the inaugural event had only one student in attendance. The HCWA Summer Internship Program has come a long way to where it is today – an ideal means for the Authority to identify and develop young talent showing an interest in the water profession.
“This kind of growth (in our Internship Program) is really exciting to see, because it shows that more students are recognizing the value of a career in the water industry and the impact it has on our community,” says Tamara Woodie, HCWA Division Director of HR and Risk Management. “We’re proud to give them a chance to explore those opportunities and start building a future in this field.”
The HCWA Summer Internship Program continues to grow in the number of student applicants and in the number of participating departments at the Authority. Last year, eight departments provided work experience for a record 19 students who completed summer internships at the HCWA. This year, 11 HCWA departments are providing such opportunities.
While this partnership between the HCWA and SCTC took some time to get off the ground, more students appear to be interested in dual enrollment – adding a class at SCTC to their current high school course work – while serving as a summer intern and applying their academic interests to part-time work at the utility.
The HCWA 2026 Summer Internship Program will run from June 1 to July 24, providing eight weeks of training and work experience for those interested in an assortment of job opportunities at the Authority, which currently employs more than 300 water professionals, including a few who are working full-time after completing a summer internship in year’s past.
To participate in the program, a local high school student must register for course credit at SCTC while simultaneously applying for a job opening as an intern with the Authority. HCWA department managers, supervisors, and other employees were on hand at the April information session to share their story while recruiting summer interns for their respective department.
Some of the departments providing internship job opportunities at the Authority this summer include water and wastewater laboratories, purchasing and inventory, water and sewer line maintenance, operational technology, communications, land management, and more.
During the April information session, Rhonda Murdock, whose twins Dwayne and Destiny completed the Summer Internship Program last year, spoke glowingly about the personal and professional growth she saw in her children during their involvement in the program, including the lasting relationships they now have with HCWA water professionals.
“I’m impressed with the entire program, and it brought me peace of mind not just as a parent but as a water customer,” she explains. “I had no idea how much goes on at the Water Authority. The kids learned so much about so many aspects of the Authority’s work. They (HCWA water professionals) really put them (the students) to work, and I love that.”
The HCWA Summer Internship Program targets rising juniors and seniors in high school. As participants in the program, the students attend class at SCTC on certain days during the eight weeks of the program while working at various HCWA departments on those days they are not in class.
