SPLOST-Funded Roadway Projects Reach Major Construction Milestones

Two major transportation projects are approaching significant construction milestones this month. Bridge work is now advancing on both the McDonough Parkway Extension and Flippen Road Extension projects.
Together, these extensions represent a $25 million investment in transportation infrastructure and improved connectivity. The projects are funded through a combination of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and Transportation SPLOST (T-SPLOST) programs.

McDonough Parkway Extension

Construction crews are expected this month to begin installing bridge beams for the new bridge carrying the McDonough Parkway Extension over State Route 155. Over the coming weeks, motorists traveling along SR 155 should expect to see the beams being delivered and lifted into place as construction progresses. While contractors will manage traffic throughout the operation, minor delays may occur during this process.

Funded through T-SPLOST at a total project cost of $16.2 million, the McDonough Parkway Extension will create a new roadway connecting State Route 42 and State Route 155. Once complete, the new corridor will provide motorists in central Henry County with a bypass option around the McDonough Square. It does so by connecting to existing sections of McDonough Parkway serving State Route 20/81, State Route 42 and Jonesboro Road.

Construction is anticipated to be complete in the fall of 2026.

Flippen Road Extension

Bridge construction is also advancing within the Flippen Road Extension project. Bridge beams will arrive this week for the new Walnut Creek crossing. Because the bridge is located within the active construction zone for the new roadway, much of the work is not visible from surrounding public thoroughfares.

The Flippen Road Extension is funded through SPLOST V at a total project cost of $9.2 million. It will extend Flippen Road south from Stratford Circle to Jonesboro Road and the Dutchtown school cluster. The project will provide a much-needed secondary entrance to the Dutchtown schools, improve north-south connectivity in western Henry County and add sidewalks connecting Stratford Circle to the school campus.

Construction is also expected to be completed in the fall of 2026.
Bridge beam installation represents one of the most significant milestones for these major road extension projects. It marks the transition from foundation work to construction of a bridge structure. Together, both projects will enhance local connectivity and provide residents with meaningful transportation connections within Henry County.
