Commissioners Honor Unity Grove Rosenwald School with Proclamation

HENRY COUNTY, GA — February 19, 2026—Unity Grove Rosenwald School, located in Locust Grove, is the only surviving Rosenwald School building in Henry County. The Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation honoring the school as a treasured historic landmark at the regular commission meeting Tuesday evening. Former students and community members, whose legacies are intertwined with the Unity Grove Rosenwald School, accepted the proclamation.
The school officially opened for classes on November 2, 1931, serving African-Americans until 1954. This significant landmark represents the struggle for educational opportunity and advancement for the African-American community in the segregated South.
The proclamation read, “…Rosenwald Schools across the South became centers of learning and community life, and Unity Grove nurtured generations of students, strengthened families and fostered civic pride in Henry County and…after decades of neglect following its closure, renewed preservation efforts began in 2010…”
The Henry County Arts & Culture Alliance acquired the school on April 1, 2023 and has since worked to rehabilitate the landmark into a museum and community resource.
Henry County and The Board of Commissioners support the ongoing efforts to preserve and restore Unity Grove Rosenwald School so that its legacy can be preserved for future generations.
